Trust isn’t lost when things break. It’s lost when no one owns the fix.
Most industrial projects accept that things will go wrong. Specs change. Parts don’t match. Field conditions shift. But nothing corrodes vendor trust faster than deflection disguised as explanation.
PMs hear it all the time:
“That’s not in our scope.”
“We weren’t told the opening changed.”
“We sent what was quoted—talk to your engineer.”
The deeper issue? Not the delay. The void of ownership.
Distributors who close that trust gap:
Frame the issue with timelines and evidence, not blame
Offer solutions even if they’re outside pure scope
Loop in install crews early to prevent downstream QA snags
Being right doesn’t win loyalty. Being constructive under stress does. And for PMs juggling multiple trades, a vendor who can bridge—not widen—the trust gap is a rare asset.
