Avoiding Contractor Coordination Failures: Lessons from a Technical Debrief

By Glazix | June 4, 2025

Contractor coordination failures don’t always start on the job site—they often originate in planning stages where glass distributors are under-empowered or overlooked. Without clear expectations and site-readiness communication, even perfectly fabricated glass products can face costly delays and mishandling.

Technical Debrief: Mismatch in Install Prep for Sloped Skylight Glass

A distributor was tasked with providing tempered and laminated IGUs for a sloped skylight installation at a university. Despite submitting proper panel weights and dimensions, the general contractor misallocated manpower and anchoring hardware. When delivery occurred, the job site wasn’t prepared for the panel sizes, and a panel was dropped during transfer.

The contractor blamed the distributor for not flagging the “difficulty” in handling the units. But emails showed the specs were acknowledged weeks in advance.

Breakdown Summary

No pre-install coordination call took place.

No lift plan was created or shared between the distributor and installer.

Project managers on-site were unaware of special rigging requirements.

Recommended Preventive Practices

Require a mandatory coordination meeting one week before delivery.

Provide engineered lift plans or handling recommendations for oversized units.

Offer jobsite prep checklists for general contractors on large-glass applications.

Glass distributors can’t control the site—but they can control how well-prepared their partners are. Making contractor coordination part of the deliverable—not an afterthought—protects your product and your reputation.
