Cross-training operators on both can flatten your production curve and reduce bottlenecks when one cell gets overloaded.

You should also consider rotating roles not just across machines, but across shifts. Have your first-shift CNC lead spend a week shadowing the second-shift kiln tech if your plant does glass annealing. You’re not looking to replace specialists—you’re trying to create resiliency.

A successful cross-training program starts with skills mapping. Build a matrix of every crew member’s current capabilities, then overlay it with your equipment list. Match team members with training potential to machines that pose high risk if underutilized—like your automated IGU line or your robotic arm for loading ceramic molds.

Modern cross-training isn’t classroom-only. It thrives on shadowing, hands-on demos, and small task ownership. Assign one operator to run setup while another manages first-article inspection. Alternate those roles every week. Over time, you build redundancy without hiring new staff.
