ESG Scorecards for Suppliers: How to Set Them Up

By Glazix | May 29, 2025

A Practical Guide to Evaluating Vendors for Sustainability, Ethics, and Risk

If you’re distributing glass, ceramic, or refractory products, your ESG impact isn’t limited to your own warehouse. It’s deeply tied to your supplier base—how they manufacture, treat their workers, and manage emissions. An ESG scorecard is a structured way to evaluate, track, and improve supplier performance across environmental, social, and governance dimensions.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s visibility and accountability.

Why Scorecards Matter Now

Major contractors and OEMs are requiring ESG disclosures from their Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers—including distributors.

Risk mitigation: Vendors operating in low-regulation countries may expose your business to labor or emissions liability.

ESG goals: To cut Scope 3 emissions or meet DEI targets, you need data from upstream.

Key Categories to Include

Environmental

Does the vendor have a published EPD or LCA data?

What percent of their energy use is from renewables?

Are they managing wastewater or kiln emissions?

Social

Do they meet local labor laws and wage minimums?

Are they audited for working conditions?

Do they support community employment or training programs?

Governance

Do they have anti-corruption policies?

Are they ISO 14001 or 45001 certified?

Do they report on ESG annually?

Setting Up the Scorecard

Use a simple weighted score (e.g., 1–5 scale across each KPI).

Start with top 10 vendors by spend or volume.

Require third-party validation where possible (audit reports, certifications).

Distributors that implement scorecards gain leverage to make better sourcing decisions—and prove ESG compliance up the chain.
