Field Insight: When Project Size Determines Who Gets the Sale

Big projects don’t just need glass—they need risk control.

In large-scale construction projects, the sourcing strategy shifts. When the scope involves thousands of square feet of glass, phased deliveries, and coordination with multiple subcontractors, the supplier’s ability to scale—and manage risk—often tips the decision toward a distributor.

Project size brings operational challenges: sequencing, storage constraints, multiple install crews, and staggered timelines. Direct manufacturers may offer better per-unit pricing, but they rarely offer flexible staging or split shipments tailored to a site’s evolving needs. Distributors do.

Procurement teams handling airports, hospitals, or commercial towers need to minimize onsite congestion and avoid damage to fragile products. Distributors with local warehouses and delivery coordination teams provide a logistical advantage, ensuring just-in-time drops rather than overwhelming the site with full truckloads. They can hold materials, reroute them, and communicate daily with site supers—tasks direct manufacturers aren’t set up to do efficiently.

Larger projects also come with higher risk exposure. A mistake in a 10-panel job is inconvenient. A mistake in a 600-panel job is catastrophic. Buyers are finding that distributors—especially those who offer pre-install support, sample approvals, and post-delivery service—are better equipped to manage those risks and absorb the scale without faltering.
