Field Insight: When Speed of Delivery Determines Who Gets the Sale

The fastest truck wins the job.

In a Michigan hospital retrofit, the glazier’s team discovered three broken fire-rated panels during unloading. The install clock was already ticking—HVAC crews were waiting, and the space had to be sealed within 48 hours. The buyer reached out to the original manufacturer, only to be quoted a four-week lead. A local distributor countered with, “we can cut and deliver by 10 a.m. tomorrow.”

That response wasn’t a fluke. Distributors are increasingly winning bids because of their ability to respond to short lead-time needs. Stock-on-hand, in-house cutting, and flexible delivery coordination allow them to fulfill time-sensitive orders that manufacturers simply can’t touch.

Speed isn’t about having a fast product line—it’s about having the infrastructure to act immediately. For glass buyers in the U.S. and Canada, especially those handling tenant improvement, disaster response, or shutdown maintenance, speed is more than a competitive edge. It’s a qualification.
