What Is a Criticality Matrix?

A criticality matrix ranks equipment based on three primary factors:

Impact of Failure (safety, cost, production loss)

Likelihood of Failure (age, history, load)

Detectability or Redundancy (can failure be seen or bypassed?)

Each asset is scored, often from 1 to 5, and plotted on a matrix that drives maintenance strategy.

Step-by-Step: Building Your Matrix

List All Assets

Include everything from production-critical machines to utilities and mobile equipment.

Assign Scores for Each Category

For example:

A kiln might score 5 for impact, 4 for likelihood, and 2 for redundancy.

A pallet wrapper may score 2, 3, and 4 respectively.

Calculate a Weighted Score

Total the values or apply a formula that reflects your plant’s risk appetite.

Map Into Categories

Critical: Requires predictive monitoring, stocked spares, and high PM frequency

Moderate: Preventive only, with tracked history

Low: Run-to-failure or minimal maintenance
