Commissioning shouldn’t feel like Russian roulette—but it often does.
When startups go sideways in high-heat, refractory-intensive projects, they don’t just impact timelines—they erode reputations. For PMs, commissioning stress is often where weeks of margin, credibility, and trust get burned.
The most common failures stem from:
Misaligned heat-up protocols
Material incompatibility at expansion joints or seal transitions
Late-discovered install errors that passed initial QA
None of these issues show up in the RFP. But they surface, every time, in the post-mortem.
Distributors who help avoid commissioning stress do more than deliver:
They provide startup checklists tied to material behavior (castables, boards, modules)
Offer thermal compatibility tables with expansion data across material interfaces
Flag likely fault points (e.g., tile edge zones, over-torqued anchors, mismatched expansion gaps)
It’s not just about materials working. It’s about knowing how they behave under ramp, soak, and stress. The supplier who can guide that conversation before the burners light is the one PMs call back on the next job.
