Let’s begin with a simple shift: CBA in operations must factor non-monetary costs. For example, holding 2,000 square feet of porcelain slabs in your Quebec warehouse may only cost $1.50/sq ft per month in physical terms. But the real cost includes risk of chipping, mismatch due to color lot variations, and obsolescence if the job specs change mid-project.
A smart ops leader looks at that inventory and asks: what is the opportunity cost of holding this? What’s the value of not having that capital available to pre-stock high-turn glass panels for the Calgary condo market this season?
CBA is also essential in vendor negotiation. When a supplier offers a $2,500 discount on a bulk order of ceramic mosaic tile—but lead time extends by four weeks—you’re not saving money. You’re increasing project delay risk, jobsite storage costs, and field error due to mis-sequenced deliveries. A true CBA would assign a monetary equivalent to that delay exposure and often show the “deal” as a loss.
