Precision starts with grams, not tons
In batch-based ceramics and refractory production, the accuracy of your raw material weighing system is foundational. A few grams too much feldspar or too little kaolin can shift your entire batch outcome—leading to glaze issues, shrinkage defects, or reduced sintering strength. That’s why weighing integration is no longer optional—it’s a core control point.
First, evaluate your current weighing method. Are you using manual scales with handwritten logs? Are there check weighers at each step or just one batch scale at the start? How is that data logged—on paper, spreadsheets, or integrated software?
Modern systems use load cells, digital batching controllers, and PLCs to automate weighing. These systems trigger material feeds, confirm target weights, and stop flow when limits are reached. Integrated systems also log the weight data in real time and associate it with the batch ID—creating traceability.
Accuracy improves dramatically when weighing is tied directly to MES. The system can cross-check each weight against the formulation recipe. If an operator tries to load 12% zircon instead of 10%, the system flags the deviation and prevents the mix from starting.
Some advanced plants now use gravimetric feeders and batch hoppers that self-adjust in real time. These systems are especially useful in multi-component mixes where precision is critical to thermal stability and shrinkage control.
Beyond precision, integration improves efficiency. By eliminating manual log entries and material corrections, weighing time is reduced. A single-source-of-truth digital record also strengthens compliance for audits and ISO certification.
Preventative maintenance of scales and feeders is part of the integration journey. Schedule routine calibration and create SOPs for drift detection. Out-of-spec scales lead to out-of-spec product—there’s no way around it.
