Material Selection Missteps in Focus: Audit Breakdown from the Trenches

By Glazix | June 4, 2025

Choose the wrong glass type—and it doesn’t matter how good the install is. You’re still paying for it.

Material selection isn’t just a design decision—it’s a risk management move. For glass distributors, recommending the correct product type for performance and compliance is often the difference between a smooth project and a costly redo. Unfortunately, when sales teams move too fast or project specs aren’t clearly communicated, the wrong product ends up on-site.

A recent audit of a mixed-use project in Alberta exposed just such a failure. The building’s south-facing elevation called for high-performance solar-control glazing to manage summer heat loads. Instead, clear annealed units were supplied and installed—glass that lacked any low-E coating or UV filtering capability. The mistake wasn’t caught until HVAC costs spiked and internal finishes started fading under direct sunlight.

What went wrong? The estimator used outdated specs from an early bid set, and no one verified final submittals before ordering. The result: 86 units had to be replaced—at the distributor’s expense—because the original order was technically “per plan,” but not per approved revision.

Material selection errors like this can be prevented by implementing stronger controls during the quote-to-order cycle. Distributors working with low-E, bird-friendly, spandrel, or laminated products should validate each item against environmental and code requirements, especially when dealing with public or LEED-certified projects.

Standardizing checklists for sales engineers and requiring sign-off from project managers before order release adds a layer of protection. In complex builds, some distributors are assigning dedicated technical liaisons to interface directly with architects and specifiers during design development.

Glass isn’t a one-size-fits-all material. If your team treats it like it is, you’re taking on liability your margins can’t absorb.
