Many distributors default to cost-plus pricing or blanket discounts, but in today’s volatile market, that’s a dangerous play. Raw material inputs like alumina, magnesia, and silicon carbide have seen sharp fluctuations due to geopolitical instability and freight bottlenecks. A poorly calibrated bid might win the project but bleed your margin dry before the first truck ships.
Step One: Know Your Fully Loaded Cost
Most distributors calculate base unit cost and tack on a modest markup. That’s not enough. For tender pricing, you need a fully burdened cost model that includes:
Freight and fuel surcharges (especially for dense materials like refractory blocks)
Warehouse handling
Custom packaging or kitting for field installs
Currency hedging if you’re importing from Europe or Asia

Step Two: Segment the Bid Components
Not every line item in a tender has the same sensitivity. For instance:
High-consumption SKUs (dense firebrick, castables) are often tightly price-shopped.
Ancillary products (insulating blankets, ceramic anchors) may carry more margin flexibility.
Service elements (on-site install guidance, mix design consulting) can be baked into pricing creatively.
By analyzing the margin profile of each component, you can adopt a blended margin strategy—discount on the visible lines, recover on the hidden ones.
Step Three: Analyze the Competitor Landscape
If you’re bidding against manufacturers or vertically integrated players, you’re up against factory-direct pricing. But if the competition is another distributor or regional player, you may have more room. Use prior bid history, customer feedback, and procurement patterns to gauge how low is too low.
Also, factor in delivery timing. If you can promise faster fulfillment on high-heat bricks during a kiln shutdown, that speed becomes part of your margin justification.
Step Four: Prequalify the Buyer
Not all bids are equal. Some buyers are transactional and want the cheapest landed cost. Others value:
Proven performance data on high-alumina or phosphate-bonded bricks
Local stocking availability for emergency repairs
Technical service for on-site troubleshooting
If you’re bidding to a long-term customer, build in loyalty rebates or service guarantees instead of racing to the bottom on price.
Step Five: Use Tiered Pricing Models
Create bid options with tiered levels:
Base Tier: Lowest price, no frills, extended lead time.
Mid Tier: Faster fulfillment, partial stocking, access to a technical rep.
Premium Tier: JIT delivery, on-site support, product warranties.
This gives the buyer a sense of control—and protects your margin if they opt up.
