The RFP said “install-ready.” The field said “where’s the detail?”
Scope ambiguity is a quiet killer of project schedules—and a source of PM frustration that procurement often never hears about. It happens when material descriptions or deliverables are written too vaguely to be actioned in the field without extra calls, clarification, or change orders.
Classic examples:
“High-temp fiber blanket” with no specified thickness or density
“Precast refractory shapes” with no anchoring design or slot tolerance
“Turnkey delivery” with no clarity on offload method or access requirement
These gaps create stress downstream:
Foremen don’t know how to prep install
Delivery crews arrive without proper rigging
QA checks get delayed due to missing documentation
Distributors who close scope gaps before award gain project-level trust:
“Here’s what’s missing in the current material schedule—and what it will cost later.”
“We’re flagging this cure protocol now so your QA team doesn’t get stuck post-install.”
“This module layout won’t fit the opening based on your supplied CAD. Want a re-scope?”
Scope clarity isn’t about adding cost—it’s about reducing chaos. And in field-heavy installs, chaos is the one thing no PM budgets for.
