The Right Way to Introduce AI to Plant Veterans

By Glazix | May 30, 2025

Integrating AI into your plant sounds great—until you run into pushback from your most experienced operators. They’ve seen systems come and go, and they know how production really works. So how do you bring AI into the mix without alienating the people who know the plant best?

Start by shifting the narrative. AI isn’t here to replace the furnace operator—it’s here to support them. Frame it as an assistant that helps monitor trends, catch errors, and reduce stress during high-alert moments. For instance, AI that flags firing curve drift or predicts burner imbalance makes life easier, not harder.

Next, involve veterans in the rollout. If you’re introducing an AI-driven scheduling tool or predictive maintenance dashboard, bring experienced personnel into the demo and feedback sessions early. Let them voice their skepticism. That’s how you build buy-in—and make sure the system reflects real plant conditions, not just theoretical ones.

AI models often rely on historical data—data created by your veterans. That’s a great talking point. Their years of operation form the baseline for what AI sees as “normal” or “optimal.” So in a way, AI is amplifying their judgment, not replacing it.

Be transparent about what AI can and can’t do. Make it clear that the system will recommend, not control. If AI predicts an upcoming chiller failure or suggests a new annealing profile, the final call still sits with the shift lead or controls engineer.

Training is also key. Use low-pressure, hands-on workshops rather than PowerPoint presentations. Let teams explore AI tools in sandbox mode—where nothing breaks and curiosity is encouraged.

Lastly, recognize and reward those who adopt early. Highlighting stories of operators who caught a quality issue or prevented a breakdown thanks to AI fosters positive momentum.

When AI respects plant wisdom and adds real value, even the most seasoned operators will come around. It’s not about replacing judgment—it’s about extending it, with better data and faster insights.
