Why OEE is more than a number—it’s a roadmap

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is one of the most powerful metrics in ceramic manufacturing. It distills three critical dimensions—availability, performance, and quality—into a single percentage that reflects how well your equipment is actually working. But while many plant supervisors track OEE, few truly use it as a strategic tool for continuous improvement.

Let’s break it down.

Availability measures planned versus unplanned downtime. This includes scheduled maintenance, tool changes, and unexpected failures. In ceramic lines, availability suffers most when kilns go offline, conveyors jam, or loading crews fall behind schedule.

Performance compares ideal cycle time against actual throughput. If a press is rated for 600 tiles per hour but runs at 450, performance is compromised. Causes include suboptimal material flow, worn dies, or inexperienced operators.

Quality represents the share of first-pass yield. Any cracked greenware, glazed defects, or warped refractory bricks reduce your quality score.

An OEE of 85% is world-class, but most batch-based plants sit between 50% and 70%. The real value of OEE lies not in the number itself, but in what it reveals. A dip in performance might highlight a need for better raw material consistency or more training on press operation. Poor availability might trace back to insufficient PM routines on a kiln.

OEE becomes even more powerful when applied across shifts and departments. Benchmarking forming vs. drying, or comparing the night shift to the morning team, allows for targeted coaching and process refinement.

Technology amplifies OEE tracking. SCADA systems can automatically capture downtime reasons and calculate cycle times in real time. MES dashboards can overlay OEE trends with maintenance logs or quality reports—pinpointing chronic issues.

In one example, a tile manufacturer boosted its plant-wide OEE from 61% to 74% within six months. The key wasn’t just measuring—it was empowering each department to own their slice of the score and solve what was within their control.

OEE isn’t just for engineers—it’s for every operator, technician, and supervisor who wants to understand where time, output, and quality are lost—and how to win them back.
