Using AI to Build Better BOMs in Refractory Assembly

By Glazix | May 29, 2025

Refractory BOMs (Bills of Materials) are some of the most complex in industrial distribution. A single kiln lining, ladle assembly, or burner tile set can contain dozens of custom-shaped units, castables, anchors, mortars, and insulating boards. Building accurate, efficient BOMs is critical—but rarely easy. AI is changing that.

AI-powered BOM generation tools are helping refractory engineers and distributors assemble faster, reduce errors, and better align material usage with performance specs and customer constraints.

Why Traditional BOM Creation Is Inefficient

Many BOMs are built by hand, based on templated jobs, drawings, and engineer judgment. But small miscalculations—like miscounting wedges or underestimating gunning mix—can snowball:

Extra materials must be rush-shipped

Field crews stall or substitute the wrong materials

Post-installation performance suffers due to spec mismatch

Worse, BOMs often fail to evolve with job history, material innovation, or updated anchoring systems.

How AI Improves BOM Accuracy

AI models draw from:

Past project BOMs (successful and failed)

CAD drawings and 3D models

Material spec sheets (thermal conductivity, expansion rates, etc.)

Customer history and installation preferences

Environmental conditions (hot face vs. backup zone, exposure cycles)

They evaluate patterns and generate suggested material lists—flagging likely undercounts or incompatible combinations.

3D Mapping and Visual Bill Support

Some systems now integrate with scanning tools to match kiln geometries or furnace linings with known part libraries. AI then generates a layout-specific BOM, complete with packing and staging sequences.

Example: An aluminum foundry needs a ladle relining. The system references similar past jobs, customer usage notes, and updated gunning mix yield rates. It automatically adjusts the mortar-to-brick ratio and flags a past issue with overuse of expansion joints in that furnace type.

Business Benefits

Reduced job-site material shortages or returns

Higher accuracy in installation quotes

Improved field performance (less post-install maintenance)

Better staging and warehouse prep efficiency

In refractory work, where every job is custom and every minute of downtime matters, AI is helping turn tribal BOM knowledge into repeatable, scalable accuracy.
