Every touchpoint that doesn’t add value—from extra handling to redundant scanning—is a cost. In glass logistics, this includes double-racking, repacking to correct mislabeled items, and walking long distances between cut lines and packing areas.

Field teams can quickly identify these wastes. They know when they’re redoing work caused by vague orders, unclear cut specs, or slow system updates.

Lean Principle #3: Flow Where Possible, Pull When Necessary

Lean supply chains favor continuous flow. In glass ops, this could mean scheduling back-to-back cuts of the same thickness or tint to minimize line changeovers. When flow isn’t possible—say, for specialty ceramics or make-to-order laminated panels—use pull systems triggered by real-time demand.

This keeps inventory lean while ensuring high-priority jobs get the resources they need, when they need them.

Customer demand is rarely even. But your internal workflows can be. Use takt-time logic—synchronizing tasks to available capacity—to smooth scheduling and avoid the peaks and valleys that lead to burnout, rush charges, and mistakes.
