Wastewater Recovery Systems for Ceramic Production Plants

Water is one of the most underregulated but overused resources in ceramic manufacturing. From slurry mixing to glaze application and equipment cleaning, ceramic plants consume large volumes of water—and much of it ends up as high-sediment wastewater.

As environmental regulations tighten and ESG scrutiny increases, wastewater recovery systems are no longer just optional—they’re a necessity for forward-looking ceramic producers and distributors with captive manufacturing.

Why Ceramic Plants Are Water-Intensive

Types of Wastewater in Ceramics

Process Water

High in suspended solids, typically from slip preparation and shaping lines.

Glaze Water

Often contains metals (e.g., lead, barium, zinc), frit, and high pH.

Cleaning and Rinse Water

Less contaminated but inconsistent in flow and content.

Wastewater Recovery Technologies

1. Settling Tanks & Clarifiers

Simple, low-cost systems that separate solids through gravity. Suitable for bulk volume management.

Limitations: Can’t remove dissolved contaminants or organics.

2. Filter Presses

Compress sludge into dewatered cakes for easy disposal or re-use in grog.

Benefit: Recoverable solids can be recycled into non-critical ceramic bodies.

3. Membrane Filtration (UF/RO Systems)

Ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis systems clean water for direct re-use in production.

High recovery (>90%)

Removes dissolved salts, metals, organics

4. Evaporation Systems (Mechanical or Solar)

Used in arid regions or where water discharge is restricted. Converts waste stream into distilled water and sludge.
