Wear Grade Ratings in Ceramic Pump Linings

Pumps handling slurries, corrosive fluids, and high-solid suspensions rely on ceramic linings to protect casings and impellers from abrasive wear. Wear grade ratings, typically based on ASTM G65 or Taber abrasion tests, quantify material volume loss under standardized conditions—guiding distributors in specifying the right ceramic for centrifugal, diaphragm, or slurry pumps across US and Canadian operations.

ASTM G65 Wear Index:

Measured as mass loss (mg) per 1,000 rubber-wheel cycles with abrasive sand.

Grade W1 (< 5 mg): Top-tier resistance; usually WC–Co coatings or reaction-bonded SiC ceramics. Suitable for heavy-duty slurry pumps in mining and dredging.

Grade W2 (5–20 mg): High-performance alumina (≥ 99 %) and dense SiC–alumina composites. Ideal for pulp-and-paper, chemical slurry, and cement pumping applications.

Grade W3 (> 20 mg): Standard alumina ceramics (95 % Al₂O₃) and zirconia-toughened alumina for less abrasive fluids.

Taber Abrasion (ASTM D4060):

Common for polymer and ceramic overlays, measuring wear under rotating abrasive wheels. Provides comparative data for coatings vs. solid linings in washdown-prone environments.

Corrosion-Wear Combined Testing:

Exposes samples to slurry in acidic or alkaline media before abrasion runs, simulating service in chemical process pumps. Lower combined weight loss indicates superior dual resistance.

Ceramic Lining Recommendations:

Severe Slurry & Sand-Laden Fluids: Use W1-rated reaction-bonded SiC or WC–Co overlays on impellers and volutes for minimal erosion and extended service.

Moderate Abrasives & Chemicals: Select W2 alumina-SiC composites or 99 % alumina tiles for balance of cost and wear life in wastewater, pulp, and mineral slurries.

Clean or Low-Abrasive Streams: Standard 95 % alumina (W3) linings suffice in light-duty pumps handling enzymes, food products, or low-solid cleaning agents.

Installation & Maintenance: Ensure precise bonding with compatible mortars or epoxy adhesives, maintain liner thickness > 5 mm, and schedule inspections when 50 % of wear allowance is consumed to prevent pump casing damage and downtime.
