The submittal said “approved equal.” The crew called it “totally different.”
Spec deviations don’t always crash a project—but they absolutely undermine field momentum and PM confidence when not surfaced early. And when things go wrong, the post-mortem chatter isn’t about the product—it’s about what wasn’t said.
What PMs whisper:
“We didn’t know it needed a new cure schedule.”
“They didn’t tell us QA had to re-approve the change.”
“We burned two days adjusting install—we should’ve flagged it earlier.”
Smart distributors preempt deviation fallout by:
Delivering side-by-side comparisons on performance, install, and QA impact
Coordinating buyer, installer, and inspector signoff before shipment
Including visual field notes on any change that affects spacing, anchors, curing, or system behavior
The goal isn’t to avoid deviations. It’s to make sure they don’t become a trust violation. PMs don’t forget the surprise that cost them days.
