What Your Buyers Want to Know About Raw Material Sourcing

By Glazix | May 29, 2025

In 2025, buyers—especially those in public-sector construction, green-certified buildings, and OEM manufacturing—are asking detailed questions about where your materials come from.

They want to know: is your sourcing ethical, low-carbon, and compliant with current ESG frameworks?

Here’s what they’re really asking—and how you should be prepared to respond.

1. Geographic Origin

“Where was the clay, feldspar, or cullet extracted?”

“Is this mined in a high-risk or carbon-intensive region?”

Answer Tip: Include country of origin, processing site, and mode of transport in your documentation. Bonus points for regional sourcing.

2. Labor and Ethics

“Do you audit your suppliers for labor violations?”

“Are you sourcing from regions with known forced labor risks?”

Answer Tip: Show proof of SA8000, WRAP, or ISO 45001 certification—or name your vendors and their certifications.

3. Carbon Footprint

“How much CO₂ is emitted from cradle to gate?”

“Can you provide an EPD or carbon per unit?”

Answer Tip: Have at least one third-party EPD available for key SKUs—and a carbon intensity figure per product class.

4. Recycled vs. Virgin Ratio

“What percent of this tile is post-industrial?”

“Can you guarantee your glass is 40% cullet or more?”

Answer Tip: Share verifiable recycled content percentages. Don’t exaggerate—buyers are auditing.

Distributor Takeaway

You don’t need to know everything—but you must know enough to build trust. Get upstream visibility into your own vendors and publish a sourcing transparency summary to win pre-qualifications and long-cycle contracts.
