Winning the Post-Tender Game in Emerging Refractory Markets

By Glazix | May 29, 2025

Securing a tender is just the beginning. Here’s how to retain contracts, build trust, and expand post-award.

In many emerging markets—Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia—refractory materials like monolithics, firebricks, or insulating castables are procured through formal tenders. But winning a bid is no guarantee of long-term success.

The real competitive edge lies in how you manage the post-tender phase: service, delivery, performance tracking, and client education. This is where foreign refractory suppliers either earn multi-year loyalty—or get replaced by the next lowest bidder.

Why the Post-Tender Phase Matters

Once the pricing war ends, the value war begins. You’ll be judged not by your spec sheet, but by:

Whether the material arrives undamaged and on time

Whether your team supports lining, gunning, and curing

How you handle unplanned kiln stoppages or failures

Emerging market buyers—especially in cement, steel, or lime—favor suppliers who treat the PO as the start of the relationship, not the end.

1. Align Technical and Operations Teams Early

Even after a win, the plant’s operations team might be skeptical of your product. They weren’t involved in vendor selection. Win them over by:

Scheduling on-site kickoff calls

Providing detailed installation guides in the local language

Assigning a local technical liaison—even if part-time

Show you’re here to deliver uptime, not just product.

2. Nail the First Delivery

Failure here is common and costly. Focus on:

Correct packaging for heavy ceramic/refractory loads

Pre-clearance with customs (especially for bonded materials)

In-country logistics partners with experience at industrial plants

Consider dispatching a field engineer for the first install cycle, even if it eats margin. It earns trust you can monetize later.

3. Create Performance Visibility

Emerging market clients love data—but rarely get it. Track and report:

Thermal performance vs. benchmarks

Wear rate after 60/90/180 days

Reapplication cycles compared to previous suppliers

The better you make them look internally, the harder it becomes to displace you in the next RFP cycle.

4. Layer in Support Services

Offer value-adds like:

Spare materials pre-staged for emergency outages

Training sessions for new operators

“Refractories 101” guides for procurement teams

Every one of these deepens your relationship beyond price.

Winning the contract is step one. Winning the relationship happens after the first shutdown, first install, and first issue. The refractory suppliers that succeed in emerging markets don’t just deliver material—they deliver uptime, education, and trust.
